String theory

2024

AI, AI, AI. It’s an omnipresent subject, whichever way you feel about it.

At my previous job, I wanted to do two things: 1) as a data analyst in the digital team, I wanted to understand what people’s attitudes to AI were and 2) I wanted to show my team mates that data isn’t just bar charts and line charts. Data is fun, engaging, physical.

1. What did we do?

Armed with a whopping £30 (€34), I bought us a plywood board, string, nails and markers and set to work, with the help of my team mates.

I put forward 4 statements:

  1. My computer is spying on me

  2. AI will achieve consciousness

  3. I would get an AI chip to enhance cognitive abilities

  4. AI can enhance creativity in arts and music

Participants had to agree or disagree with each. They would take a piece of string and wrap it around the nail which represented yes or no on the board.

In this case, we intentionally wanted something low-tech with an arts-and-crafts feel.

2.  What did we find?

The team is certain that our computers are spying for us. They’re pretty divided on whether AI will achieve consciousness. Most are NOT willing to get an implant to enhance cognitive abilities. Most think that AI can enhance creativity.

3. What’s data got to do with it?

Data can be 3D! Participants could enjoy the process of stringing their answers along the board, as well as see in real time what others were saying on the matter.
